Finding Your First Client As a Solo Consultant
Here are 10 suggestions panelists at a recent WCBS Small-Business Breakfast meeting offered to an independent consultant looking for clients:
1. Be very specific about your area of expertise.
2. Highlight what's different, and better, about your experience.
3. Make a former employer a new consulting client. It already hired you once.
4. Network with people who might become your clients or who will lead you to their contacts, who might become your clients.
5. Don't just network. Be sure you ask for business.
6. You may have to do some volunteer work at first. You have to assure people they will not be sorry for hiring you.
7. Get testimonials that tell stories about your credibility.
8. Hire a business coach.
9. Stick to a budget.
